A Lonely Planet author and photographer for over 10 years, Frances Linzee Gordon writes books on the Middle East, Africa and Europe. She has travelled to more than 100 countries but has a particular passion for the Middle East and is a student of Arabic. In 2006, she became the first, official independent traveller to set foot in Saudi Arabia, and has since filmed there with the BBC. After 7.5 Million ski steps, 195kg sledges and temperatures in the -30's Alex and his team-mate, George Bullard, "wrote a piece of expedition history". Enduring the hostile and dark Arctic Spring, they skied further than any previous polar expedition without support of any kind. Their journey took nearly four months and the team had to overcome tent fires, crevasse fields and ten days on emergency rations.

Living the dream - rowing and capsizing in the Atlantic. Rachel Smith
It was a friend and solo trans-Atlantic rower, Debra Searle, who encouraged Rachel to take on the Atlantic challenge. Rachel decided to row in the two-handed Atlantic race with her friend Lin to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care having lost her Grandmother to the disease and to take on an extreme challenge that she really believed was achievable. In February 2008 after 76 gruelling days rowing across the ocean, Rachel and Lin, arrived in Antigua surviving a terrifying capsize just 300 miles from the finish line. They won the woman's pair class and Rachel describes the experience as both the most rewarding and yet the most difficult thing she has ever done!
